alright to call or email a person you've broke things off with just to see how they're doing?

It really depends. Was this person hurt badly by your breaking up with them? If so, it might not be a good idea because they may start getting their hopes up and you could - without realizing it - be leading them on. Ya know what I mean? ESPECIALLY if the break-up is "fresh." If you think you want to get back together, then it's perfectly fine.

Don't call from a position of sympathy if you're asking how they're doing. If you call and say, "I just wanted to see how you're doing." Don't. It kind of reminds them that you broke up with them and it makes them feel as if you're checking up on them and that will just make it worse.

Additionally, don't use words or phrases that might make them think that you're re-thinking the situation and that you want to get back together with them. Avoid saying things like "I've been thinking about you a lot" or reminiscing about memories that you had while you were a couple.

IMHO, I think it's best just to let it go. It's very hard to be "just friends" after a romantic relationship has been broken off. A lot of the time when we want to make contact with an ex-lover after a relationship has ended it's due to the fact that we are sad about someone who was a significant part of our past who is no longer there.

If you NEED to contact them, just keep it simple, and casual. But I wouldn't even bother. It's not cold, it's just life.

I usually don't feel the same about people who you don't hear from anymore for ions and then suddenly they get the urge to write you. I'm usually brief with them, but usually I let them fall off the radar.

From experience I found out it's best just to leave it alone.

that's fine... not all the time though you wouldn't want to make them think you want them back.
