i started ballet classes ( one per week) about 4 months ago, and found myself to be so inflexible it was almost like a joke. i still cant get past about a 90* angle when i do the splits to the side, but after less than 2 weeks of stretching i could do the splits to the front on both legs. i also have found that, although i have never stretched to do this or anything, i can put my legs out infront of me and lie down on them, tummy and all and touch my toes or whatever with no difficulty at all. when im standing in 1st, 2nd, or any other position of the feet, i can easily do a 180 degree turnout. infact, occasionally, i have to watch myself and make sure i dont overturn.
anyway, im not just bragging but as i am a very non athletic person, and ive never done dance before, is this very unusual, common or just lucky? i have always been very inflexible, but with the exception of the splits a la seconde i suddenly find girls in my class asking what i do to get so flexible? what have i done??

it's amazing that you can do the front splits after only 2 weeks...i would guess that you have the ability to be naturally flexible, it's just that you never really worked on it, so it just never happened before, and you seemed unflexible...
to be able to lie on your legs is very hard for some people, and it's amazing that you can do it...it took me soo long to be able to do that...
don't worry so much about the side splits taking longer, because they normally do...
the fact that when you stand in those positions, and your soo turned out is the result of good turnout muscles....so many dancers want that and work so hard the develop the muscles enough...

The bodies of the people are very diferent, some have turnout, others have more flexibility whith their legs, others arms...

Maybe you have a very good flexibility with splits on the front but not very good with the splits on the side, but you can do everything with a little bite of effort, keep that way!

spread the dance

Two things.
1. You are young.
2. You are a girl.
When I was in third grade, I went to a school across town that was designed for the 'gifted'. For a few weeks, we had ballet for our p.e. class. Yeah you got it, ballet.
I don't think I did anything stretchy at all, just felt stupid. Now I'm a personal trainer and I can see the potential benefit of learning ballet for body toning and muscular control, but I would never admit it. So, you didn't hear anything . . . .

Good for you, Sammy! I took ballet as a kid and Yoga as an adult. I don't know if that was your question, but I do recommend it for the ultimate flexibility -and- if you ever get an injury, your teacher should know the best treatment.,

It sounds like you are just a naturally born ballet dancer. Make sure that you keep it up and you can go anywhere you want to :)

It's practice, practice, practice that creates this flexibility. Continue doing what you're doing and good luck with your dancing. The world needs more dancers.
