unencumbered. I am leaning toward relinquishing everything I own-just letting it all go-except for the very basics that I could take as carry-on on a plane and nothing more. I am terrified of taking this leap, but I feel so compelled to free myself. I'd appreciate hearing what your own experiences have been as I am on the brink of doing this by year's end. What are tyour thoughts...oh, and don't say "put it in storage or leave it with family"-both of those are NOT options.

The most important thing is that you are not so attached to your stuff that you feel you can't live without your stuff. There's nothing wrong with having stuff. The issue is how attached we become to all that. I have lots of stuff. I like stuff. Even so, I've done without all that before and I could do without it again if I needed to.

I used to be that way.

I always laughed about the fact that I could move everything I owned in the back seat and trunk of my compact car--three trips, max. I always acquired some furniture for my apartments, but I would just set those things out by the dumpster for people to take when I moved. I had a friend who worked for a moving company, and he got abandoned furniture for me when I needed it for the next place. I bought my clothes at the thift store, recycled my funiture, never bought anything new. I felt like I was living very low on the hog and liked it very much that way.

It is freeing not to be weighted down by lots of things. It was a very footloose way of living, I got it out of my system after about 10 years, and now I have a washer & dryer. I will never be able to move again!! lol!

Follow your bliss, babe.

I think it was Alan Bates who wrote: Give away the things you're attached to." Or words to that effect. It was in the middle '50's and I was just divorced and starting back to UC Berkeley. I had very little, but gave away what I had--funiture, and kept the bare necessities. I was very depressed, but Berkeley openned the world to me. Maybe it was because I had let go of the material things and openned to non-material ideas and goals! I'm glad I did, as I was totally free to follow a new life! But that's for you to decide what you want to REPLACE the material WITH!! We can always buy new physical furnitions--but not new goals, understanding and happiness. You have to find those on your own to replace the material things.

Yeah. I am right behind you. I want to sell my condo and walk across the states. Buss across Europe... something. It's not likely. I have too much here as far as friends and family just to walk out someday.

To satisfy your need take small road trips. Go hiking on a weekend. Do something some what out of the ordinary. That's a big jump that can easily turn into a dive then crash.
