when voting for presidents, does the popular vote even matter at all? the electoral college votes, and like the election of al gore vs. george w. bush, the popular vote was for gore and the the electoral collge voted for bush. bush won.
so, my question is: if you vote for president, does it even matter?
or is is just better to vote for local government? if you vote for mayors and such, they vote for senetors and governors, so you would want to start at the bottom with people who share your beiefs, right?

It matters in your state, the popular vote in your state determines how the State's electoral votes will be cast. Oh and by the way, Clinton got 46% of the popular vote his first time and 48% his second time. But in Clinton's case, he won the polular vote in states with a lot of electoral votes (as did Bush, it's the way the Constitution was set up). This has happened several times, and yes it matters. I have never had my vote count toward an electoral vote (I've voted in 7 Presidential elections), but only in two of those times my guy didn't win.

As for local elections, they are actually more important. People turn out in droves to vote in Presidential elections, but local and state elections don't get the same turnout, you should be very concerned who is in charge locally because they are the people who are really spending your tax dollars (even the Federal dollars). My advice, vote every time you are asked to!

The popular vote matters by state. The popular vote makes the decision of which group of electors go and cast a vote in the electoral college. The overall popular vote as a nation doesn't matter.

After 2000, I stopped voting for the Presidential elections. I do however vote for local officials who effect the things I do more than any given President.
