120 - 160 is usually safe. 180 is creeping into danger level, but may not cause problems. 200+ is where complications start. Best answer: CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR

Right around 100 is best, assuming that you measure first thing in the morning, without having eaten anything since the night before. Anything above 125 means that your doctor should be told so more tests can be run. Once you have breakfast, the numbers go up, and measuring later in the day doesn't give you any meaningful information, so ignore any numbers other than before-breakfast numbers. One high morning reading doesn't necessarily mean diabetes, but it's a sign that he is at risk and should be tested more rigorously and more often.

There is a blood test which shows how sugar levels have been for a three-month period; the doctor will want to run that to see if the 125+ number is just a blip or a sign that his sugar is consistently too high.
