Sharpton first gained national attention in 1987 when he supported Tawana Brawley, a 15-year-old black girl, who claimed she was gang raped by 6 white men, some of them cops, in the village of Wappingers Falls, New York. She fabricated the whole story, but Sharpton supported her till the end of the case. And he has never apologized for his involvment in the case. That was the beginning of his career, & hopefully this will be the end.
Rev. Al Sharpton is at the center of a federal investigation. The FBI & IRS want Sharpton's financial records dating back to 2001. The agencies' officials say they want to know whether Sharpton incorrectly stated the amount of money he raised during his 2004 presidential campaign. Officials are specifically investigating whether he fudged the figures in order to illegally obtain federal matching funds. Federal officials are also investigating claims of tax fraud, including whether Sharpton mixed funds from his non-profit group, National Action Network, with several of his "for-profit" ventures. As many as 10 of Sharpton's friends & employees have been subpoenaed; however Sharpton has not.
