I believe BJ Thomas was the first artist to score a hit with this song. It was a massive hit in Australia in the 70's for John (then known as Johnny) Farnham, who is best known outside of Australia for his stint as lead singer of Little River Band in the mid-80s. ("The Other Guy", "Playing To Win").
