The expression "pay it forward" is used by a creditor who offers the debtor the option of paying the debt forward to a third person instead of paying it back. Debt and payments can be monetary or by good deeds. In sociology, this concept is called "serial reciprocity". A related transaction, which starts with a gift instead of a loan, is alternative giving.

So you loan me ten bucks, when I go to pay you back you tell me to give or "loan" it to whomever I meet that might need it.

Lloyd C. Douglas ( more famous for The Robe) wrote a book called Magnificent Obsession...1950s It was later made into a movie starring Rock Hudson. (The premise of this book was "to pay it forward" anonymously.)
I never saw the movie, however, the book made a lasting impression.
There is evidently another movie out based on the same idea.
One of the insurance companies has an ad on TV now with that premise.

Pay it forward was an awesome movie. Pay it forward means you do something nice for 3 people then those people do something nice for 3 other people and so on.

well you've heard of paying someone back , well this is paying something forward doing something good for someone , and then that person does something good for someone else , a bit like a chain letter but by showing someone kindness and passing it on , before you know it , we can help so many people , it may not help millions but we can help thousands

i think it means if you help someone and they want to reward you for it you would say "pay it forward" meaning if you want to pay me help someone else in return.

It means that if someone does you a favor, rather than doing a favor for them in return, you do a favor for someone completely new.
