The short answer is no, but it's more complicated than just that.

Beyond shooting photos for the daily edition, many photojournalists work on multimedia projects, photo stories and other pieces that may require them to write more than just a brief caption, but don't quite rise to the size of a full story. They're letting the pictures say most of what needs to be said, and adding the appropriate context.

Photographers at small dailies or weekly papers can sometimes be more involved in the process than just shooting pictures; they're more likely to have to write a story or lay out a page or something else beyond their basic job description.

My experience is that a little more than half do in the newspaper trade. Far less for magazines. I have about two magazine articles published a month and I've end up working with photographers 95% of the time. Some I've never even met beyond emails!

For newspapers it's good to have a balance of skill sets beyond a good "camera eye". This not only includes writing, but interviewing and editing as well.

It depends upon the country they are working in and who they are working for.

In some countries, such as Australia, it is frowned upon for a photographer to also work as a journalist, or a journalist to take photos.

If working overseas as a "foreign correspondent" many journalists take their own photos and often photographers write stories -- anything from short pieces to feature articles.

Even TV news cameramen, when working outside of their home country often write stories or take photos, or even both.

Someone who is a "freelancer" can often get around the restrictions in their own country.
