Since I live in Chicago I need a lot of extra help for my plants.
I use a long, pink tinted, grow light that I can lay on top of the big pots so that the little plants around the big pot in the windowsill can all get the heat and the light.
I paid about $15.00 each at Home Depot, a full kit with both the bulb and the mount.
If you live in a cold area or just use them in the winter then get one that will emit more heat but if your say, in Arizona then you should ask the person at the store what gives off the least amount of heat.
If your only going to use them for the winter to keep your plants alive then I recomend buying a metal shelving rack and you can hang them form the top shelf and put the plants on the lower shelves.
If you REALLY need to keep the heat in then you should get the type of film that they use to seal windows and tape it onto 3 of the 4 sides and then make a Flap for a door that you either tape and retape when you go in to water or use velcro to make an easy open.
Good luck... And don't do anything illegal!

When you use professional grow lights like "High pressure sodium" or "Metal halide" lamps make sure there is a good ventilation system because they produce some heat. If you plan on growing very sensitive plants the ventilation has to be set up like a closed system, with good filters in place. Most plant and garden centers have them, but you can also find them in most electrical/hardware stores. Do a search on those stores near to you. Good luck.

There is such a thing as a grow light that is used for indoor plants but as far as inexpensive is concerned I would recommend fluorescent lights.

Indoor plants do best in natural light, but generally not in direct sunlight. Usually these plants come with a little tag that lists care instructions.

There are special kind of lights, either incandescent or fluorescent, called "grow lights" and they have more of the spectrum of the sun. They are more expensive than regular lights, but they are also better for people's eyesight.
