I'm sending out my college apps and I'm not sure if I need more postage. My friend says each stamp is good for about 3 pieces of regular 8x11 printer paper. Is that true? About how many pieces of paper would seven stamps mail?

Or does anyone know how heavy a letter can be for one stamp?

1 oz. is correct, but don't forget the envelope.

A standard 4 1/8" X 9 1/2" envelope with up to 5 sheets of paper will be ok for a single first class stamp (41cents) acrording to the first class mailing chart.

A single 41cent US postage stamp is good for a 1 oz, envelope. There is also a limit on the physical dimensions of the envelope. Anything over 6 1/8 in high, 11 1/2 in wide, or 1/4 in thick is subject to a 17 cent surcharge.

When I was doing a project for a marketing class, my professor said mailing out surveys should be limited to 4 regular sized sheets otherwise that would up the postage beyond one stamp.

no, you may not. To qualify as a postcard, it has to be 1 panel, in other words, unfolded, and no more than 4-1/4 x 6-1/2 inches.

It's calculated by weight and envelope size, not by the number of sheets of paper. A "typical" envelope that weighs one ounce is one .41 cent stamp. Go to usps.com to preform other calculations.

1 oz.

Typically six sheets of standard 8.5 X11 office paper weighs approximately one ounce.

So, 6 sheets of paper.

Oh and 6 x 7 is 42.
