extremely likely that you needed a battery.
the original equipment batteries on Honda cars last 3-5 years. Less if the car lives in a warm climate.

The battery testers that they use in Honda dealerships measure the battery capacity in cold cranking amps as that is an indication of the current state of the battery compared to when it was new. The testers are very reliable indicators of batteries that will fail in the near future, so while you can start your car today, you may not be able to start it next week and it probably won't start next month if the battery fails the test.

I am very confident that if they told you that you needed a battery that you no doubt did. I'm sure they are providing you a great service in saving you from a breakdown and that they are not trying to rip you off.

I'm sure they have a printout of the test if you need to prove it to your boyfriend but I don't think they're trying to rip you off.

hope that helps

I think they're supposed to actually tell you what extra work they're going to do otherwise they could just make up charges. But to answer the question it's not very likely that it was completely dead unless you drive a lot of short distances and/or have some type of aftermarket sound system thumping at all times. But better safe than sorry most batteries need to be replaced every 3 or 4 years or so.

At least Your on the safe side now, if they gave You a good battery, I was just in the Mall parking lot and an older gent with a Toyota was stuck with a failed battery.

If the battery was original or at least three years old, then you needed a new battery.
