Instead of relying on an arbitrary rule why not just read the circulars that the supermarkets put in the newspapers? You get fresh-stuff cheap that way.

This is false i worked at a grocery store and they never changed there discount. also the meat cutter would put out rotting meat and change the expitation days so he didn't have to throw it away beware of the meat you buy at the grocery store some times it's not always the best.
