I have heard that vista has some problems with older peripherals that do not work with its code. If you recently upgraded your operating system from XP, then that could be it. You need to get new speakers, or earphones to get it to work.

you only need a codec if you're like... playing media
ok if it's WMP: make sure the file is supported. if it's like wma or mp3 it should be. Then when it doesn't make sound click on the file in the now playing list and go to the error details. It will say it needs a certain codec and you can go to the site ("Web Help") and see which one it is.
then you can usually find it online... just searching for it. it may even have it on the microsoft site.

if u put vista on the pc your self, u will need to download sound card drivers,
download everest home edition 2.20
and it will tell u what sound card u have,
then do a google search and download the drivers

Its possible that your sound card isnt supported. you need to goto manufacturers website and find the support & drivers link from there you will have to input what model it is then locate the drivers for vista. Its possible that your manufacture isnt supporting your sound card any longer to so you may have to upgrade it.

you don't need codecs, you need device drivers. try windows update or your computer manufacturer's website to see if they have updated drivers available for vista.
