I got the Depo shot last month on the 26th. Over the past week or so I've been noticing a brown discharge, I thought that was my breakthrough bleeding. Then yesterday evening I had red blood, which was really light. I wore a pad to bed and there was nothing on it all day. Today I didn't have any discharge until about 5:30 this evening, when the bleeding came back. It's not heavy at all, and it looks like it has some mucous in it. Is the red blood my period or just breakthrough? My period isn't due until the 22/23 of December. Thanks.

Technically it's considered breakthrough bleeding. The shot inhibits the formation of ovum, as well as thinning your uterine lining, so any bleeding you have is breaking through the perpetual chemical barrier established by the shot (hence the term "breakthrough bleeding").

It is often quite common to have this and sometimes for it to become quite problematic (as in nearly constant). I had to stop using the shot after nearly 3 years because of constant bleeding. I hope you don't have this problem.

Sweetie, breakthrough bleeding is where you have a heavy period that lasts way too long. Your body is adjusting to the depo. Brown blood is old blood and your body has to adjust to the hormonal change. Doesn't sound like anything to worry about. When I was on birth control pills, I would have a heavy period that would last for three weeks because the pills weren't strong enough and that is what was termed as breakthrough bleeding.

I wouldnt of even THOUGHT of getting that shot.
It really messes up your bidy and your cycle..
when your due for your next shot, skip it.
Switch to the patch!
I've been on it for years, and no worries like the ones you have.
