1. In the South there was general rejoicing - independence from the dam* Yankees. In the North, there was a sense of adventure and patriotism. Men volunteered to "save the Union." No one would have cheered if they had any idea of the eventual cost - - over 600,000 young men DEAD and hundreds of thousands more wounded - many crippled for life. The initial feeling on both sides was that it would be over in a few months.

2. Slaves states such as Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri stayed in the Union with assurances that slavery would not be altered in their states. These were states that would not openly aid the South in the war - though some men did go south and join the Confederate army.

3. Simply put, the South only needed to defend. The North had to attack to force the Southern states back into the Union. Factors of warfare in that time period heavily favored the defensive. Where did the South lose major battles? When they invaded Maryland (Antietam Sept. 1862) and Pennsylvania (Gettysburg July 1863).
