Others have mentioned that the stars represent the states, and the stripes represent the 13 original British colonies, which were also the first states. (When they added two states to make 15, they tried adding two stars AND two stripes, and realized that adding a stripe per state could get unwieldy.)

As to why they have stars, they are not an uncommon charge in heraldry, which was (and largely still is) the basis of flag design. Stars can be thought of as indepent, equal entities, so they are a logical choice to represent the colonies on a flag which originally was designed for the colonial army when it was in rebellion against Britain.

Flags were not just symbolic at the time; they were also a means of signaling troops and keeping them aware of the location of their commander. George Washington had a solid background in standard warfare of the day, and of course recognized that his army would need a unique flag, so the story is that he visited Betsy Ross, a seamstress with a good reputation for competence, to have a flag made. Supposedly, he mentioned six-pointed stars because he thought they were easier to make, and Ross demonstrated her technique for producing five-pointed stars, which Washington agreed would be preferable.

It's not clear how much of that story is apocryphal.

They Represent the 50 states in America
In actuallity: The Flag should have 51 stars
Due to the fact that we (USA) "own" the State of Israel.
They (Israel) have not ever been considered a nation since they were allowed to come back & be a nation in 1948.
We are the main reason why they are the "STATE of ISRAEL" Hope this is helpful
