I'm sure that Americans are taught this in elementary school. Whether they retain it to adulthood is another matter. And one which is totally unimportant since any foreigner could give us directions if we got lost.

This whole "United Statesian" thing is boring and tired. The vast majority of people around the world identify "Americans" as being from the US. That's just the way it is.
As for many Americans ignorance when it comes to geography, it's embarrassing to us as a country.

Is it true that 1/5 of people on Yahoo Answers say "united statesians" instead of United States?

HAHAHA United Statesian... I think I used that phrase as a joke a couple of weeks ago. But yes, there is a large group of people who apparently have never been taught geography, though 20% of the entire population seems high.

maybe not 1/5th, but certainly the children elementary school and below who haven't had any geometry lessons might comprise that much of the population.
Besides, it's not hard for any adult to recognize America's location... All you have to do is look for the spot the rest of the world rotates around. Cheers!
EDIT: come on, it's a joke, admit that you liked it!
EDIT AGAIN: Just so you know, the term Yankee specifically refers to ONLY northeastern states' citizens... just thought you'd want to know so you don't look so ignorant saying it like that.

Sadly, it may be true. Geography isn't taught much. I can locate the US on a map and the other countries and continents, too! I can find oceans, mountains, etc. Then again, I'm old! Things were taught differently when I was in school.

There are a lot of idiots out there.
Most people also think that Christ is white, and that the Egyptians were not black.
Most people do not even know that Egypt is on the continent of Africa and Christ had the same hair as any other black man.
