It may look like this in the eyes of the non-dancing crowd, but it doesn't look like that at all to regular ballroom dancers. There are some designated events, like you said, for singles. Those are different. I feel that way too when the age groups are specified. But in a normal social dance environment, there is a mutual understanding that people are there to just dance. It is my observation that it is correlated with the quality of dancing. If overall quaily is good, then most people are there just for dancing. It is true that some people start dating after they've met through ballroom, but people might start dating even if they met at a library or a coffee shop.
If you don't have a partner it doesn't make you a loser. It makes you more of a loser if you quit dancing because you can't bring yourself to looking for one. Lack of partner is a temporary state that every serious ballroom dancer goes through, on somewhat regular basis. I'm talking about all competitive dancer including Dancing With the Star caliber professionals. Maxim Shmerkovski is without a partner, and the whole world knows that he's looking for one. Does it make him a desperate loser? I don't think so, because I saw so much talk here about how hot he is. I think many girls would stand in line for 2 hours to just dance one dance with him.
Here is another question for you: why does it sound so desperate to you? I can see how it may sound like you are interested, by why desperate? You can't really draw a parallel to dancing at clubs. Yeah, if you go to a club alone it is taken a certain way. Unlike club dancing, ballroom dancing takes a lot of skill. Classes are about acquiring skills, not dates.

Did you know that ballroom dancing is now considered a sport? Have you really looked closely at the bodies of ballroom dancers? These people are not losers and you wouldn't be either if you joined, would probably do you a world of good. Have fun.

It's a fun form of exercise and artistic expression as well as social interaction. It isn't a dating service, and shouldn't be treated as such. If you find a good way to find a regular partner, though, those of us who have been dancing for years would like to hear your technique, because that's perhaps the toughest thing about it. For instance, there isn't an amateur lady at my level of experience who dances Standard within 100 miles of where I live, though there are a few more advanced in American smooth.

Its for fun and to learn a refined kind of dancing and a good form of exercise. If you happen to meet someone there with at least this as a common interest, then thats a plus.

I've taken them in the area I live in and its more like couples with their first wedding dance, that kind of stuff. If you live in a more urban area, they may have singles lessons where they will match you up.
