It gets a little boring in prison sometimes... why not?
It's not like he wiped out an entire race of people.

Just read the story in full Ian Huntley did not set up the account on Facebook himself, he got a female friend to set it up for him, if he has access to a computer, he shouldn't have access to the internet.

I know a few prison officers, and all of them agree that prisoners on long sentences MUST be given some privileges. They are easier to control this way. Prisoners need to come out of their cells for chores etc and to be treated humanely. Allowing a few creature comforts makes them behave. A lifer has nothing to lose if he behaves badly and has no privileges. A lifer who has a TV has a TV to lose if he misbehaves, and having the TV in the first place makes him less likely to want to misbehave.
Removal of privileges for no reason creates unrest and puts prison officers in danger.
Also, lifers usually buy luxuries from their wages if they work, they don't just get given them.

If it were up to me he'd be in solitary for the duration. I don't agree that criminals of his calibre should have any perks. I live about 3 miles from where he and many other cat A prisoners are held and it makes me sick that they are always complaining in the local paper about violation of THEIR rights and lack of facilities. They think they're on holiday or something.

because he's a lifer and lifers are treated like royalty, if not better.
The authorities are so scared that Huntley, being so high profile, will try to kill himself if he doesn't get everything his own way.
I'm surprised they haven't let him out yet.
