Most newborns aren't really that beautiful (to others beside their families!). The nine months in utero and the trip through the birth canal, plus little newborn rashes and conditions can make it hard to see the beauty that will be there as they grow into themselves! Also, besides beauty being in the eye of the beholder, "pretty is as pretty does", and since newborns are fairly helpless, they don't have much opportunity to demonstrate an adorable personality or beautiful character just yet!
I answered a similar question to this earlier. If you can't find a particular feature that resembles one parent or the other to comment/compliment on (most parents love hearing that the baby looks like them!), then why not say something like "Isn't he/she precious?!" The word precious as in "valuable" or "dear" might be truer and yet still complimentary, if you can't honestly find anything adorable or beautiful about them yet!

This is so funny! I'm amazed at how many people said "Oh all babies are cute. There aren't any ugly babies." Well maybe they haven't seen many babies. I am here to tell you I have seen ugly babies and I love babies. I love them all ugly or cute. But there are some ugly ones. Usually I just say how precious. Which isn't a fib because like I say I love ALL babies. When my daughter was born she reminded me of that midget that played a baby in one of the old Little Rascal shows. She is now a beautiful woman but I'll allways remember how she looked like that character in Little Rascals. LOL

I'm sure we all have but I think to actually say to yourself and acknowledge to yourself that that is an ugly baby is kinda wrong somewhere in the universe. Babies are beautiful no matter what they look like from one person to another. I think both of my babies are the most beautiful creatures God has put on this earth but I'm sure not everyone will agree and I'm sure all parents think that of their own children. Like the old saying "A FACE ONLY A MOTHER COULD LOVE".

Some babies are ugly. But it would be very wrong to tell their parents that. Growing up there are so many different stages. Everyone is ugly and/or pretty at some time of their life. But in a way really, all babies are beautiful.

My friend's mom got re-married and when her mom and the new guy had a baby, OMG she was so ugly. The dad was ugly and the baby happened to be the spitten image of him. poor thing. I hope she will have a sweet personality to make up for it when she gets older!
(I know someone will give this a thumbs down because, "all babies are beautiful". Well apparently you just haven't seen an ugly one yet cuz they ARE out there) lol

Oh heck yes, I feel so bad for the girl. She's 7 now and still isn't cute at all but her step-sister is beautiful, bright blue eyes, blonde curly hair and great facial features. They're only a few years apart so they'll be in the same school next year.

My son was an ugly baby heheh, googly eyes and big lips and when visitors would say what an adorable baby I'd say they had to be joking.
It took about 3 months for everything to kind of fit in his face and now he's 16yrs old and he's such a handsome boy.

I'd say no, but I've seen some so ugly they're cute. My little girl looked like a grumpy old mexican man when she was born and she's as fair, blonde hair and bright eyed now. Of course she'll always be the prettiest baby to me.

Watch the Episode of Seinfeld where they go out to Long Island to see their friends' new baby. Crammer looked at the baby and jumped back talking about Good God! I was cracking up. Elaine just happened to be dating the Pediatrician who said she was lovely just lovely. Well the baby got sick and the Dr. came out to the house. Elaine asks him how the baby looks and he say verbatim-Lovely just lovely. So Elaine is standing there like did he just call me ugly. It was hilarious
