In my restaurant, the drain pipes of the bar sink lead out to the tank where all of the waste passes through. Because of this I have a very foul odor in the bar area. Whats a good way to get rid of this smell? Are there any kind of odor traps they make that I could install in the pipes?

You need to have a water trap in the drain line just below the sink drain. This is a u-shaped piece that traps water in the pipe, which acts as a vapor block from the sewer system.

Actually, I would be quite surprised if you don't already have one installed. It seems such a standard and automatic thing to do when installing a sink drain.

If there already is one installed, you might have a problem with your sewer vents that go up to the roof. A sewer vent attaches to the drain line and allows any sewer gas build-up to vent out of the system. I had an old house where, if all the windows were shut in the bedroom/bathroom, we would get this sewer smell. I thought it might be a problem with the drains. But, when we had the house remodeled (all plumbing replaced), the plumbers found an old iron vent pipe that had corroded almost completely behind a bathroom wall. That was the source of the smell.

Vinegar and baking soda are good cheap ways to solve this problem.

One other thing to consider is if you are near a lake or ocean. Is your restaurant high enough above water level for the tank to drain? A lot of places have smell problems and sewage problems because the sewer system will not drain. Too low.

My old apartment was about 20 feet above sea level. The people on the ground floor had the problem that their water did not drain. I was on the second floor, and it was ok for me.

This kind of problem is especially bad at night, as the stinky stuff just floats in the pipe until everyone wakes up in the morning. Yuck.

You can try putting bleach down the drain at closing time and letting it sit all night-We do this with our floor drain at work once a week,we put 2 cups of bleach down the drain at closing time and leave it there til we use the drain again the next morning

You need to call a plumber to check the p-trap, drain arrangement and venting, you may have sewer gas backing up.

Bleach works, but you must have traps, or the smell just floats up.
