I'm a Chiefs fan. The best coach was Hank Stram, without a doubt. I think the worst coach in Chiefs history was Frank Gansz. Herm the Worm is making a real run at that title, though.

This question might be a little tougher for teams like the Steelers that have had very few head coaches, but who all have been pretty good.

Browns

best - Paul Brown -- defined the post-WW II game through new strategies, coaching techniques and the attempt to merge technology with the human element...the team was named after him & the NFL club at the time - the Cleveland Rams - moved to LA so as not to compete against the then new team in a new league (AAFC).

worst - Butch Davis -- I thought he would be very successful, but the team is still paying for his terrible roster decisions.

If you go way back the NFL teams of the 1920's, there were a lot of awful ones. Over a 5-year span (1925-1929), the Dayton Triangles won two games. The Hammond Pros won 5 games from 1921 through 1926. And the Rochester Jeffersons had four consecutive no-win seasons. Remember back then, people were smaller. Most played as a part-time or seasonal job. They didn't lift weights, watch what they ate, or studied. In some cases, they played high school teams to boost their records. It was rare for anyone to weigh more than 220 pounds. And football, like all team sports at the time, had few if any blacks. We can quibble over which were the best college team was the best and which pro team was the worst. (For best college team, I could make a strong case for last year's Alabama team.) But it wouldn't be close. College team by a mile. I'd bet mortgage money on the college team and give 30 points.

Here's a great answer for everyone, for the worst coaches, how about any of the 6 coaches for the Indianapolis Colts in 13 years from 1984-1997 in no particular order..... try and remember any of these guys.
Frank Kush 82-84 (Baltimore/Indianapolis)
Rod Dowhower 85-86 (Coached the Patriots before)
Ron Meyer 86-91
Rick Venturi 91-91
Ted Marchibroda 92-95 (also coached in Baltimore)
Lindy Infante 96-97

Lets just call these guys the PRE-MANNING coaches because Jim Mora and Manning started a whole new era out there.....

Dungy obviously would be the best Indianapolis Colts Coach.

Best and worst coach in Vikings' history:
Best head coach: Bud Grant.
Worst head coach: Les Steckel. Lasted one year after posting a 3-13 record. Grant retired the season before only to come back and coach the Viking one more time in 1995.
Still not sold that Childress is the worst but he does make some dumb moves

As a Pats fan, the best coach by far has been Bellicheck. The worst becomes a much more difficult quetsion. I'm going to read that as, "who had the most potential and failed" and that i'd have to give to Pete Carroll. We've all seen what he could do over the past few years at USC. He's a top knotch coach, but he couldn't do ANYTHING for the Pats. I remember being so excited when we signed him. I thought he would finally turn us around.

Pittsburgh Steelers,

In my lifetime we have not had a bad coach as you had basically pointed out.

Chuck Knoll, 4 Super Bowls
Bill Cowher, 1 Super Bowl, coached 15 seasons playoffs 10-15 seasons.
Mike Tomlin, first year 9 & 4 record.

We are the winningest team in the last 20 years. Not bad!

For my Packers, obviously the best coach in history was a certain V. Lombardi, and as for the worst, you could take any of the shower who attempted to coach back in the 1970s and 1980s.

However, since I've been following the team, Mike Holmgren was the man, and the right coach for a certain Mr. Favre. He could have been successful anyway, but Holmgren's influence on Brett with the demands he placed on his (then) young QB made a HUGE difference in his game as well as his attitude.

On a bigger picture, Holmgren's influence can be felt in his coaching tree. At one point, Andy Reid, Steve Mariucci, Dick Jauron, Ray Rhodes and Jon Gruden were all on his staff, and they have all had varying degrees of success as head coaches in their own right.

As for the worst, hmmm...perhaps Ray Rhodes. I could say Mike Sherman, seeing as he did little in the playoffs in the 2001-2004 seasons, but that would be unfair as he did have a good record in the regular season. So, that honour goes to Ray Rhodes, who really had a tough time of it back in 1999.

Sorry can't be more specific than that, but since I've been watching the Pack, all I can choose from is Holmgren, Rhodes, Sherman and McCarthy.

How does a Steeler fan answer this? Isn't it by default Tomlin?
For Denver I'd say the best is Mike Shanahan. Because he finally brought a Super Bowl victory to Denver. The worst is Wade Phillips. Although a short tenure, I thought he was awful. I can't believe he's winning in Dallas now.

I can't pass on this one and I must go to the college game for my answer even though you clearly stated NFL.

Steve Spurrier was the best coach at the University of Florida with Urban Meyer coming on strong.

Ron Zook was so bad that no other name needs to be mentioned as second worst.

If you insist that I stay in the NFL I would have to say Lombardi as the best and Bangston/Bingston or whomever replaced Vince as the worst. It's been a long time but I think his name was Phil.
