Yes, you do have to add dishwasher salt (make sure it's good quality and intended for dishwashers - not regular table salt!) every so often. The reservoir for it does fill with water, so you need to keep on adding salt gradually until all the water has gone - it comes out of the top and dribbles into the bottom of the dishwasher, which is fine.

Mine will still wash when the salt container is empty, but it doesn't do such a good job.

Check and make sure there are no dishes that are catching on the spray-bars (like pan-handles, silvervare etc.) Now that I think about it; with the water sitting in the bottom of dishwasher, your kitchen-sink drain may be clogged. Try Drano in it; if that doesn't work, run a snake down it - from the Hardware store (about $10). They work really well. Especially the ones you use with an electric drill. Requires 2 people to run it though. Good Luck! Just a note: DON'T put Drano in the dishwasher.

Are you sure the light says "Low Salt?"

Could it be Water Softener or something...?

You could have two problems now...
