before my due date? (Or at least on it?) Or am I DOOMED to go past my due date? I just want to hear what other people have been through (people who were NOT dilated early.) Oh yeah, I'm about 50% effaced. Thank you!

I went through two of my pregnancies without dialating until I was at the hospital in labor. With my first my water broke and I dialated slowly after that. She was born in between her original due date and the modified (after the ultrasound) due date). With my second I went to the hospital when my contractions were 5 minutes apart and when I got there I had maybe dialated a cm. She was born exactly on her due date! With my third I had an emergency c-section two weeks early because I had a placental abruption.

You absolutely can still got early or on your due date. While pregnant women love to obsess about dilation and effacement (I know I did), it really isn't predictive of how far off labor is. You can walk around dilated to a 3 for a weeks or go from 0 to full on labor in a day.

The only downside to not dilating early is that you have more work to do when labor does start.

Don't lose hope!

I gave birth 11 days early! I went to see my doctor on a Thursday, and he told me I wasn't ready (I wasn't dilated and the baby wasn't dropping). I thought I was going to give birth late. Then the following Friday I started getting contractions, I thought it was just a sore stomach (It felt like I had to 'go'). So after several attempts at using the bathroom, I finally decided to go to the hospital to see what was up. When the nurse checked, I was 4 cm dilated, and I gave birth that day. So, you can give birth ANYTIME. I've heard of people contracting and giving birth soon after the doctor said they weren't dilating. Just make sure you're ready, because those babies don't wait for anyone!

I was dilated for 6 weeks with only mild contractions. I got preeclampsia and had to be induced. So dilation is always an indicator of upcoming labor.

Take care and best of luck!

I'm guessing this is your first baby? My first baby went past my due date by 10 days and i was dilated two for weeks before he finally came.

I was 40.5 weeks and wasn't dilated. IT SUCKED finally at 41 weeks I started to dilate.
Basically you never know how its going to go, just know that its going to happen and hopefully before you start begging your doctor to induce you. Even though, throughout your pregnancy you were totally against it!

you know every pregnancy is diffrent. you might go from 0cm dilated to 10cm in a few hours. so don't worry about. this is no indication of how early or late you will be
