Because legend has it that men don't (or didn't) wear anything at all under there kilts. My late mother was from Scotland (a Glaswegian by birth), and she always told me that men wore nothing beneath their kilt. As I live in the U.S., I have only had one opportunity to wear a kilt in my whole life (at a local "renaissance" fair), and I decided to hold with tradition and go bare beneath it. My girlfriend had to restrain her giggles all day because every woman that walked up tome had to ask what I was wearing under my kilt. In response, I would just smile as my girlfriend let out yet another giggle...

That is strange. I never wear any, I simply lift my kilt and show them I'm not when they ask. Try it.
