Would the V6 have superior smoothness, torque & power in comparison to the same displacement in-line four?

The V6 could have a hemispherical head.

yes they can be quite compareable. Just depends on how they are designed. Look at the 4.3 chevy v6 how it has changed over it's life of production.

In theory the V6 would have more torque and is smoother. But in reality there goes much more than just the engine configuration that makes the car smooth.

Consider how many people ask (here) that their engine is rough. And that goes for any engine.

Good Luck.

P.S. I own an Audi 1.8T (4 cylinder) and it is smooth and have plenty of torque.

In the v-6 you have two more bearings, rods and pistons. This increases the internal friction of the engine. So any gain in smoothness is offset by loss in friction to some extent.
Subaru claims that for maximum efficiency you do not need another 2 cylinders till you cross the 2.5 liter range.
Don't know if it is true, but that is what they claim. It has to do with volume per cylinder and burn rate of the mixture.
