I think it is a REAL disease, because I am a recovering alcoholic, sober since 1998. If I was to go have just one drink, I literally would not be able to stop until I was plastered. There is something in an alcoholic's system that causes us to be incapable of stopping at just one drink. I do NOT think by admitting I am an alcoholic, that I am using that as a cop out ! Cop out for what ? It would be a cop out if I tried to make excuses for my drinking instead of taking ownership of my problem and getting the help I needed, which I did do !!

A non-drinker doesn't have a compulsion to drink, and once they have some alcohol, they can stop. The opposite is true for an alcoholic. Yes, it's a disease, not a cop-out.

I think it is an addiction - more so for others than some. I don't really think it is a cop out - I think people really can have a difficult time if they choose to stop drinking, and like any other addiction, can relapse.
I am not certain why they call it a disease, though. Never looked into it that far...

No, because of the fact in my journey, drinkers get into too plenty worry. Alcohol is frequently the downfall of a dating like that, so why waste time. there is likewise the prospect that alcohol will come into the equation and this person ought to cheat on you. A non-drinker dating/marrying a drinker is purely soliciting for worry.

As a former heavy drinker, I can remember those days when I couldn't WAIT for quitting time so I could go home and drink my way into the ozone. It was no different than a smoker craving a cigarette. Therefore I'd have to say it's a disease (in my opinion).

It is a legitimate disease. Ive suffered from alcoholism all my adult life. I have been to a boat load of rehabs and still relapsed. I nearly died from it when the blood veins in my esophagus ruptured and nearly bled to death.(was throwing up real hard the cause) I was in ICU for a month. Its been hard for me to do it but after nearly dying it made me wake up and quit. I have to go in every 6mos to get the bands in my throat checked to make sure they are still holding. Im taking medicine right now that keeps me from thinking about it.(Campral). Anybody that has had to endure someone or are suffering from it you know it is a disease.

No it is a legitimate diseases. People who have it really do need it or the can get hallucinations, the shakes, nd get really sick. Just because alcohol is not illegal people think that it is ok but in reality alcoholism is one of the worst addictions a person can have.

Considering I suffer from being a shopoholic, I belive it is a disease. You have to find the root of the problem and why it started before they can start to work on curing themselves of the addiction. I believe everyone has an addiction.

i do not think it is a cop out as people get physically addicted to alcohol. When they have it on a daily basis their bodies make them sick when they do not have the alcohol it needs. How can that be a cop out? What is a cop out, is i was drunk and i didnt mean to sh@g her/him...

Some people just have addictive natures especially when they are unable to come to terms with or deal with their problems. If it wasnt alcohol they could use it would be something else like drugs, gambling, food, computer games, soaps etc.
