Check the states without a state income tax first. That could save you a lot of money. For an example if you live in California, there is up to 9.3% state income tax. (But there is an added 1% tax on incomes over $1,000,000 per year.) Washington state has no state income tax so you would save 9.3% immediately if you moved from California to Washington . Vermont has the hightest state income tax rate at 9.5%. Alaska, Florida, South Dakota, Nevada, Washington, Texas, and Wyoming all have no state income tax. Tennessee and New Hampshire tax dividends and interest only. Illinois has the lowest state income tax rate at a flat 3%.
If you check out places in those states remember that you would have more spendable income because you would have a lower overall tax bill.

Personally I don't like big crowds and traffic so I'd pick somewhere a little out of the mainstream. If you want low costs, and don't mind a real 4 seasons I'd pick SE Iowa. My wife is from there and you can have a beautiful home for under $200,000. If you want more summer and less winter I'd pick Fairfield Bay Arkansas. Perhaps the most beautiful lake you've ever seen and hardly anyone has heard of it.

1. Somewhere the the weather is mild, retired usually means old and bad weather could be deadly for you.
2. Somewhere with a lower cost of living that where you work, maby out south?
3. Somewhere that they can stay active, around a gym/rec center or somewhere they can do their hobby (hunting, farming, building stuff, ect)
4. A large enough city where their are available medical services if they are needed.

West Virginia.
I know... it sounds silly...
my grandparents live there.
It's wonderful!
It's definitely not the city..
anywhere in the whole state it's beautiful! surrounded by mountains... ah. I'd love to live there.
Where mammaw & poppy live; nice people, very small neighborhood..... they're 3 minutes away from the stores & stuff... but like 40 or more minutes from the 'city'
it's perfect.
you'd love it.
despite the rumors... 90% of west virginia is NOT hillbilly-ville.
it's actually quite nice.
i lived there for several years, and like i said... my grandparents still do... all of them!
[=
or... Rhode Island!
It's such a tiny state... it's all small beach communities.. right on or near the coast... but it's surprisingly not full of partying college students, either. It's wonderful. RI is so peaceful.... it's great, too. lol.
In either of those states... the price of living is quite drastically lower than most other places. Small states.. small communities... ya know!
good luck!

I'm retired and live in Laughlin, Nv. it's like a safe small Las Vegas, only draw back is medical care is iffy, and it gets hot as blue blazes in the summer, Most of the time it's paradise. I also have a house in Laguna Beach, one of the most expensive small towns to live in with a great ocean view, but I still like Laughlin best.

that depends on what you like to do and the needs you have for entertainment, doctors, transportation, etc. I personally like Tyler TX area for 4 seasons.
There is a magazine titled "Best Places to retire or something similar. Call your local library and ask if they know what the magazine is if you cannot find it listed on line.
