My stolen car was recovered two weeks after. The police found it one week ago, had it towed, impounded, after one week past they called me. Charges include towing a 1 week of impound charges. They called 4:45 Pm Friday I have 15 minutes to fill out some forms and go to the lot to pickup my car. If I don't make it I will be charged 2 more days of impound, closed on weekends. I'm thinking they make most of their calls between 4:30 and 5:00 to get more charges. Also they could have caught the thief if they investigated. The thief left a empty fast food bag in the car with an exact time/dated receipt, the drive up window there takes a picture of every customer via security camera. They refused to investigate.

I would ask a lawyer. You shouldn't have to pay the tow lot any charges...it wasn't your wrong doing so you shouldn't have to pay.

dinkilyn,
Okay, wow you are in a wierd situation! These cops figure if your car isn't a "Rolls" or a "Bentley" or a "Mercedez" or your not some political person of "Clout" in your town/city than why should they waist there time? Trust me this is all about tax-payers money and the fact they simply haven't the time for a drop in the basket when they can be in the paper for someone who's celebrity or big on the tax-payers list!! If I were you I'd go do some investigating yourself, and call the press while your doing it!! Just phone the newspaper and tell them exactly what you told us! Then have them getting a photo of you at the same darned place this man ate his lunch at in your car!! With your detective clothing on!! And have the press blast your name all over the place!! Honey you will become a Celebrity in your town if you have the courage to do this!!! Trust me, the police will be wishing they'd of taking good care to catch that man who stole your car, then!!! Trust me, the press loves this sort of thing!! Give them a call. They will be happy to accomidate you on your photo's of your doing your own police work, for the city!!! Watch and see! And dont be afraid, either! Cuz, the cops can't say nothing to you when you have the press having your back!!! They may even be happy to accomidate you with a good lawyer but make sure he isn't one who can be bought!!! This happened to my ex, who got beat up by the Long Beach Police Dept. The city bought out his lawyer!! And he had no case, after months of going to the court house for this trial. He finds out she no longer wanted to represent him, can you believe that?!! Sad, but true! So, get someone who can't be bought, someone who's from out of town, if they offer you an attorney!! And tell them you dont want one who can be bought. They'll see to it, you get someone who likes some action or has something against this same police department, you watch!! That's the press for you!! Good Luck!! Dont let these guys walk over you and not get something in return for this NONSENSE!!!!

How do you know they refused to investigate? Maybe the tow truck driver got the food. Sounds like you should have been checking in with police more frequently. But if you feel you are right, call and ask for captain or sargeant and explain how you feel and what happened and why you feel victimized second time by officers. Remember they have lots of work, not just calling to tell you they found car. Maybe they impounded it to look for leads on the criminal. Maybe they are working on it, but haven't told you yet. Maybe they are following leads, checking prints, etc. Better be careful how you step

Sounds as if the cops are wrong here. Who owns the lot where the car is stored? Keep track of all dates, times, places, names, charges, Go to the restuarant and ask for the tape. If you can get it THEN call a lawyer. If you don't want to get a lawyer, go to a city official such as a councilman that you can trust and ask him to investigate. Be sure to tell him you have the tape, but do not giveshow it to anyone except your lawyer. Going to the media is another good way to get things exposed.

Same thing happened to me! Over $500 in storage for a car whose doors were locked and alarm was on. What the hell? They never found the person who did it, although i'm betting they could've lifted prints and ran them if the really wanted to. I don't know why we get screwed for doing the right thing. This happens everywhere, not just where you live, and good luck complaining. Sorry i'm not more help. I just know how ticked you are-I just got angry all over again and it's been a few years!

Detroit has be high on that list. They covered up the mayors parties, people who were at the parties turned up dead yet weren't investigated, cops who investigated were fired and won 9+ million in lawsuits. They had a cop who hired a hit man to kill his wife. A cops kid was involved in a school shooting that wounded 3 and killed 1 yet the police released him "accidently" before having to go rearrest him the next day once that made the news.

Sounds like they just dont want to look into it. I asked my state police friend and he said that is very odd. Any police station would call you when it was found and they would try to catch the person.

Yes do what the other before me said

if its that big of a deal for you to have justice on this one, u can just pursue, just go up the chain of command

I would do this!!

you have been the victim of a corrupt educational system.. as far as the police department, anything is possible. At the very least you are the victim of a LAZY police department (not necessarily all of them, just the ones you have had the misfortune to deal with).

Get some legal advice. It just ain't right. Something smells here. Call your state senator, town official, chief of police, anyone who can help. You were the victim of a crime and they want you to pay. God forbid if your house burn down and you call the Fire Dept (you'll have to go bankrupt).

I wish they had investigated- sounds like they should have.
However- remember that a picture of a suspect is worthless by itself. I have had many cases where I have great photos or video of the suspects but I could never identify who they were (I tried!).

As far as the towing.... I don't like that they waited a week. But I believe your insurance should cover these costs anyway....
