i know nearly all there is to know about running electric and all that jazz, i just don't want to have to pay someone else to pull all the necessary permits for me. i live in pa and need to become a licensed PA electrician in order to pull my own permits. do i still have to take classes or apprentice under a licensed electrician, or can i just go take the exam and get licensed? what all do i have to do and how long does it take?

Since you "know nearly all there is to know about running electric and all that jazz", I think you should just take the exam. I've been a licensed, professional, Electrician for 26 years now, and don't know nearly all there is to know. I would suggest you do an attitude check, the type of attitude you have usually gets people injured or killed. Since you seem to know so much, why don't you google Contractor's Licenses in PA.? Why are you asking that information in this forum?

gr8alarm is exactly right. I've been a licensed working electrician all my adult life, and I still don't know "all there is to know about running electric and all that jazz." Just prove to the state that you have 4 or 5 years of experience and take the Journeyman exam. Than prove another 2 years experience as a Journeyman and take the Masters exam. When you pass, you can pull your own permits. Good luck. Or enter a state approved apprentice program and do it the right way. You will be amazed how much more "jazz" there is for you to learn.

No question, especially taboo questions should ever be kept within. Every question should be actively put forward, in an effort to at the very least desensitize the insecurities of those who would rather keep those thoughts repressed. Debating fiercely questions of society, spirituality or lack of it, sexuality, and any and everything else are what force us to progress as a society, intellectually, emotionally, and even, (I feel awkward saying this I am an atheist, though it should undoubtedly be said nonetheless) spiritually.

You need a BS in Electrical engineering or 5-7 years of experience.
PLUS you take the exam, three of them, about 9 hours.
