Arabs, basically. They didn't like the fact that the side they backed in the war lost and they had to give up a few hundred acres with no oil to the Jews.

A misconception about the 1948 Arab-Israeli war is thinking that it started when Arab armies arrived in Palestine on 15th may 1948. The war actually started almost immediately after the November 1947 UN vote to partition Palestine. Zionist militias almost immediately started attacking Palestinian villages and towns in a vicious war of ethnic cleansing to remove the majority Palestinian population. It was estimated that Zionist militias reached almost 60,000 in number in May 1948, and they were well armed, while the Palestinians owned almost no weapons, as the British never allowed the Palestinians to arm. By the time the Arab armies arrived in mid-May 1948, more than half of Palestine has fell to the Zionist militias, and hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were already ethnically cleansed by the Zionists. My father's village (Kafr Ana) was one of those villages, which fell on 21st April 1948. The total forces of all Arab armies combined were 20,000, which was one third of the Zionist forces. The Arab armies being strongly influenced by the British had explicit orders to only defend the areas assigned to the Arab state by the partition plan (Commander of Jordanian army was a Brit). Yet they even failed in that, and by the end of the war, the Arabs lost nearly 60% of the area assigned to the Arab state. Overall, more than 80% of the Arabs that were living in what became Israel were ethnically cleansed by the Zionists.
