They will do an APGAR test. Which is where they rate baby's appearance based on color, pulse, grimace (reflex irritability), Activity (muscles tone), and Respiration. Babies that score above 6 are just fine. Babies that score between 4 and 6 may need some help. Such as suctioning of the airway or oxygen. Any baby that scores below 4 require dramatic lifesaving techniques. Thats pretty much the only test they do unless you are high risk. For example if you gestational diabetes they will check baby's glucose level.

Usually a baby has an apgar score taken.. It's just a general overall health test, the PKU is another where they prick the bottom of the foot to draw blood, a hearing test and muscle check are done as well before you leave the hospital...You can ask your OB or your pediatrician...they'd be able to give you more info.

PKU (phenylykenura) is a vital test because if the baby tests positive, the baby will not receive milk and other proteins throughout like. If a baby tests positive for PKU it means the body does not appropriate process any proteins and stores them in the brain, causing mental retardation.

Others can include genetic testing for Downs Syndrome and sometimes testing for infections like HIV or Strep to prevent future problems.

The newborn is commonly assessed with the APGAR score, a quick test performed at 1 and 5 minutes after birth to determine the physical condition of the newborn. The five categories assessed are heart rate, respiratory effort, muscle tone, reflex irritability, and color. Each of these categories is scored 0, 1, or 2, depending on the observed condition of the newborn.
