I bought some oranges and the fruit flies were free! Now they are all over the place, mainly in my bathroom and kitchen. The kitchen has been cleaned, the offending oranges washed and put in the fridge. But the flies persist. They also hang out near my nighstand and I don't have any snacks there! Help!!
I have three kids so snacks are something that don't always get found the same day they were given...sorry...but that is nothing new...the fruit flies are. I have had them before and once I got rid of their home they went away but these guys are squatters. How can I get rid of them without using harsh chemicals to do it...remember...I have three kids...and 2 dogs...

Put out a glass of apple cider vinegar... it also sometimes works if you use regular white vinegar mixed with some sugar. The flies are drawn to the sweetness, and the vinegar kills them. Vinegar obviously doesn't harm people... I'm not sure about dogs, but if the dogs can't get to the tables/countertops, it shouldn't be a problem.

Put some sugar and water together stir it dump it in a shallow lid plastic will do doesn't matter what really as long as the kids and dogs dont get into it, put the dish up high above where the persistant flies are leave it over night and watch as the flies die, we have had this problem numerous times and i find this works the best, my kids were fascinated as they watched the flies swarm to the lid of sugar water.

Fruit flies live off existing food sources only. The last time I had some, I checked and found some potatoes that were in the wrong drawer and started to rot. Threw them out and the flies died off in two days. Remove the food source. Especially with kids,,,they will do the most unexpected things, as if we didnt know that.

You could use an electric fly swapper. An electric fly swapper is powered by 2 or 3 AA size batteries which generate an electric grid around it. When the fly makes contact with it, it gets an electric shock and dies instantaneously.

Do you have any dish soap with a sweet/fruit scent? In our house this worked. We got a shallow pie pan, and filled it halfway with water. I added some orange scented Dawn. We let it sit on the counter overnight, and all the fruit flies were drawn to it and drowned.
Good luck!

If they came in on the oranges, throw them out. Fruit flies only live for a few days.
