I plan to upgrade to DSL, using two computers, both use Windows XP (one is Home, other is Professional). In addition to a router and a NIC card, what other items do I need to get: any cables, etc.??

You will need an Ethernet cable to connect from the router to the NIC card and another to connect from the modem to the router. They are cheap and come in a large number of lengths. They can be very long if needed. The plugs on either end look like large telephone pugs. The can be found even at Wal Mart or Walgreens.
You will of course need a small phillips screwdriver to install the card and an anti static wrist band is always good to have when working inside any electronics.
No software is needed, XP will recognize the NIC card. Follow the router instructions as to their software.

You have two choices - wired and wireless.
If you go wireless you will need a wireless router and wi-fi cards for each computer if they are not already equipped.
To go wired you need a router/hub with 4 or more ports, ethernet cables to reach each computer from the hub and, of course each computer must be equipped with an ethernet port. If not, you can add a card to give you ethernet.

You will need 1 Cat5 cable for each PC to connect to the Router. You might need an extra one for your router to connect to the modem if you don't already have that one.

You also need LOTS of patience when you call tech support if your ISP company outsourced their tech service and connect you to someone with heavy Indian accent.
