Yes, I have read "Love Story."
Erich Segal wrote the novel based on a screenplay which he had written. The book became the best selling work of fiction the year of its release, 1970, and the now-famous film was made the same year, based on the screenplay. So, it sort of came full circle.
The movie was a hit and though it is a shameless tear-jerker (as is the novel), the movie is rated at #9 on the American Film Institute's List of the "100 Most Romantic Movies of All Time."
A famous quote from "Love Story" is "Love means never having to say you're sorry." The quote made it to #13
on the American Film Institute's AFI's "100 Years... 100 Movie Quotes, a list of top movie quotes."
There are some links below concerning both novel and movie, but don't read them if you'd rather not know spoilers.

Erich Segal went on to write novels and screenplays, including the 1977 sequel to Love Story, called Oliver's Story. In the late 1960s, Segal collaborated on other screenplays, and also had written a synthetic romantic story by himself about a Harvard student and a Radcliffe student, but failed to sell it. However, literary agent Lois Wallace at the William Morris Agency suggested he turn the script into a novel and the result was a literary and motion picture phenomenon called Love Story

Everyone over the age of 60 either read that book, saw the movie, or at least got sick of hearing "Love means never having to say you re sorry." It is a sweet little book, and a sweet little movie, although a heavy handed tear jerker. I will say this. When I saw the movie, I actually thought Ali McGraw could act. I d never seen her in anything else, and although much of her dialogue was ridiculous, she acted like I thought her character would. It wasn t until I saw her in other movies that I realized that was her only schtick, and just how bad an actress she is. She is the same in every movie, tedious, grippy, and BORING.

not trying to steal your thunder, just thought it was an interesting coincidence. The book is good but not great.
