Not if you want you business to succeed. Tell them the truth and give them suggestions to do a better job. A manager's job is to make sure your employees are doing their job well.

No. If there are things that they do well you can give them appraisal for it. The things that they don't do well you need to tell them how they can do it better. If you tell an employee that they are doing good work when they may be slacking off you are only condoning their actions. If a person is trying but still aren't quite getting it. They will never know, unless you tell them. They might not be trying to better their work because they are being told that it is good.

If the employee is not doing well than no, I mean, don't be rude towards them. Have a meeting with them to discuss those certain issues that you are having. And let the good employees know you appreciate them and what they're doing for you and the business/company.

I always made it a point to tell everyone, frequently, almost daily, "good job. "Thanks" or something positive.
However, if a person was not doing what was expected, we had a closed door conference-when I saw that it was going to become a problem. If a person though I was being a pain, thought it wasn't important, adopted a defensive attitude, or didn;t care----they were gone.

But if a person showed me they cared about their job, their company, I would do anything to help them.
The key isto learn their strengths and weaknesses, depend on them to do what they are best at, but also keep them where they could do the least damage.

If you can truthfully tell them "good job" for some portion of their work, yes, tell them specifically what they are doing well at.
You may have to look hard to find the things they are doing well if your situation has gotten pretty bad. If the things they are doing well are nearly impossible to find, then I think you need to find a different route than saying "good job" to motivate them.

Good luck!

What if you want to terminate them for poor performance? But the whole time you have told them that they do good work! Throws a little wrench in the plans!

Not if you want to be a good manager. You are only as good as the people you employ.

I think you should be honest but not harsh. There has to be some good qualities to that person and you should definitely point it out to them.

No, you shouldn't. You should praise when praise is due and note shortcomings when performance isn't up to par.
