try it at 40 to 1, you don't want to go too lean, you will seize it, better a little smoke than seizing it

my neighbors scooters use a 30:1 mix, have you considered using a synthetic? Most synthetics are a one size fits all type mixture, no need to measure out your mix. Just add one pack per gallon and thats it. For saving money some brands come in larger bottles. I have found that all my 2 stroke equipment, ie: snow blower, leaf blower, chain saw, etc. which all were 30:1 to 50:1 run great on synthetic and I don't have to keep different cans of mix around, best of all the snow blower which used to smoke out the neighbors when warming up now hardly smokes at all.

Try to chase down some Stihl, Husquvarna or Echo two cycle oil. They all have gasoline stabilizers in them. These brands are formulated to be mixed @ a 50:1 ratio in their respective products. Open your phone book to find any of these dealers. Try a 40:1 mix first. See if the reduction of smoke is much better.

Lowes and Sears sells Husquvarna products. Be careful to purchase only: Husquvarna XP Professional Performance 2 cycle oil. Home Depot sells Echo Power Blend Universal 2-stroke oil. Independent Sthil dealers have has their own: Sthil High Performance Engine oil.

Both Husquvarna and Echo oils are Synthetic and Sthil is not.

Proper mix should be on the engine or in owners manual. If not call a dealer or check on line for the proper mix. Surprised at 30-1 mix as newer engines usually run about 50:1.

I would stick to 50:1 for the premix.
