He was a self-made man and worked to create a strong legal and political career. His marriage did help though (Mary Todd was the daughter of a very wealthy - and slave owning - family from Lexington, KY).

Also keep in mind that Illinois was not necessarily sophisticated at that time in terms of society.

When he first began his campaign for presidency, he was considered a buffoon and of no threat to other potential candidates. Even during his presidency he had plenty of non-supporters in both the public and congress.

Yes, he started as a backwoods, self-educated man, but bear in mind many people were like that then.
