My computer has only 2 sata slots that are currently being used for the dvd drive and the original hard drive (C.) There is an IDE slot for a ribbon cable that I want to use to add a second IDE hard drive but when I do the computer will not start. I have the jumper set at slave and tried cable select also. Still the computer does not work. Bios settings? What can I do to have one sata hd and one ide hd in my computer working together?

set the ide to master and connect it to the farthest end of the ide/ribbon cable. go to bios and make sure to select the sat drive where your os is as the first boot device.

Dear Sir,
You connect the DVD drive directly to the mother board sata.
The hard discs may be connected to the mother board by taking new cable having another slave in the cable. the connection must be started from hard drive (C) then (D) lastly to mother board 2nd sata.
Even I upgraded my computer with one more hard disc, as I explained above.

Possibly u don't have enough power to run that many harddrives on the power supply.
If this is the case, you can always buy an external enclosure and just hook the drive up through USB. I'm doing that on my server because i ran out of places to put drives.

You could install a PCI SATA or IDE controller card. But with that many hard drives, watch your power consumption.

I would do what Gosha says, I would buy an external hard drive enclousure and just use it from the USB as extra storage.
