Traditionally its a Hispanic cultural thing. Children get part of each parents name.i cant remember specifically how it works, but a friend of mines last name is Cancel-Diaz. one name is her fathers one is her mothers. when she gets married i believe she keeps her fathers Cancel part and then adds her husbands name.

outside of culture, maybe someone wants to honor their family name expecially if its a prominent family, like John Kerry's wife, she's Heinz-Kerry because obviously being the super rich Heinz ketchup blood line she wanted tok eep that association.

maybe their parents weren't married. Or that the mom was the only girl left in the family to pass on the sir name

Because the wife doesn't want to give up her last name, so they combine them.

And in other cultures, it's commonplace to have two last names.

You can only have your father's last name, mother's last name, or both.

it is a woman lib thing or identity crisis usually after they marry somebody ,then they compound their last names.very confusing.....
