1) If the average velocity of Helium (molecular weight=4g/mole) is 0.707miles/second at room temperature, what will be the average velocity of oxygen(molecular weight 32g/mole) at the same temperature?

2)A gas of unknown composition diffuses at the rate of 10ml/sec in a diffusion apparatus in CH4 (molecular weight=16g/mole) gas diffuses at the rate of 30ml/sec.Calculate the molecular weight of the unknown gas.

please help me answer as much as possible. I have a final on monday =( thanks in advance!

Do you have a chemistry book? The formulas for the problems should be in there. You should look in your book.

Since 1/2mv^2 = 1/2kT in each spatial axis, if you hold T constant and increase m by a factor of 8 (32/4), then v must decrease such that:

8*Dv^2 = 1 ---> Dv = sqrt(1/8) = 0.354

Dv is the multiplier for teh speed of teh Helium atoms. So the oxygen atoms atoms is:

v0 = vhe*0.354 = 0.23 miles/second
