Some of us are plenty angry. Aside from the fact of our own ability to invest our money is the fact that in all likelihood, the fund will be extinct after the Boomers retire.
But you cannot get Democrats to see this economic fact. And Republicans need the votes from the AARP.

The same reason people don't get mad about the 70% of everything our government does that is blatantly unconstitutional. Ignorance and apathy. Most people just don't care or just don't know.
The fact that the government can force me to pay into a government retirement program is against every principle of freedom and liberty our founding fathers enshrined in the Constitution. Social Security, and every other federal social program is a form of tyrany and should be abolished.

The politicians don't care to fix social security because they do not pay into or collect from it. They have a far cushier retirement plan created just for them. The private sector is screwed

Social Security is the most succesful program in history. It was doing just fine until Ronald Reagan robbed the trust fund. No tax dollars go into SS.

You want to trust the business community with your entire retirement? Social Security is a social, not business, proposition. Don't mix the two. So far, America seems to be the best place to live in spite of her weaknesses.

Agreed. But there are many people who think that they will get that money back, and you can't convince them otherwise. Changing the system gets them so riled up that they storm the castle with torches and pitchforks.
OK, so it's not exactly the right simile, but you get the idea.

I think that many people realize this already. The problem is that we don't have a choice regarding whether we would like to contribute or not.
