I would have to say the worst gift I've ever gotten is a toss-up between Old Spice and old fruitcake. The worst I've ever given? I tried making these Christmas cookies one year--I had seen this recipe for them and they looked great--and I gave the cookies as gifts. They had turned out like hell, and I knew it, but it was what I had to give. I told my friends, "It's the thought that counts." They told me I should've just stuck to the thought and kept the cookies....

Anyway, what's the worst you've gotten and the worst you've given?

My mother basically raised us five kids on her own when our Dad decided he wanted to be single again. She put in for one toy for each of us from the Salvation Army becuase she couldn't afford too much. They sent one wrapped age appropriate toy for each of us to open on Christmas morning. I was six at the time. When I tore the wrapping off my gift I began jumping up and down with a model airplane kit in my hands. When I opened the box the only thing in it was the frames that "used to" hold the plane kit parts. "Here ya go poor kid, have a box of plastic bits for Christmas"!!! Ouch

I think the worst present I've ever given was a box of chocolate covered cherries to my sister. I got them from someone on my paper route and didn't want them, so regifted them to her.

Worst I've ever gotten was my own fault. When I was little, it was my habit to scout around until I found my mother's hiding place for the gifts she bought for my sister and I. One year I was maybe five and she bought us each a View-Master. When I found them, I looked at them without knowing how they work. So I ended up pulling apart the discs to look at the little films in them.

That Christmas, I got the View-Master all right, complete with ripped apart discs!

As for the worst I've ever given, when I was working in a law firm, it became the usual thing for all the secretaries and staff to give each other little gifts. I was really broke one year, and bought a dozen cheap imported little porcelain boxes, pretty things with gold-colored rims and clasps. Only problem was, more than half of them just would not open! The clasp was simply too tight. One friend even broke a fingernail trying to get hers open. I was so humiliated!

I received a Slim Whitman cassette from my sister's first husband. I had a very nice sweater for him that year. The worst gift I have given? The next year, I bought him a dickie, as in the fake turtle neck worn by Uncle Eddie in the Chevy Chase National Lampoon Christmas Story. My sister has since divorced him, and is married to one of the most wonderful men I have ever known. (I am sure you are too young to know who Slim Whitman is, look him up, so you can feel my pain!) IMHO, the dickie holds the record for the most tacky of fashion accessories ever created.

I received this Secret Santa gift that was a singing, mechanical cow... it moved and moo'ed out a Christmas carol... it was pretty depressing. The worst gift I've ever given would have to be this ugly ceramic mug of Santa I was re-gifting that I stuffed full of junk from around the house - unsharpened pencils, candy, etc. I had someone that stopped by unexpectedly to give me this awesome gift and I had nothing for them, so I had to go "get their present" and I had to composite something really quickly... oops!

The worst I've gotten: it's the same thing I receive every year from my mother. A pair of sweatpants that are two sizes too big and in the most hideous color. Fuchsia, teal, purple. I wonder which color it will be this year.....

The worst I've given: Usually goes to that one person I've forgotten to put on my Christmas shopping list. In this case I usually resort to regifting. The worst: A sausage sample pack from WalMart. Yuck!

Worst received - A stars in your eyes video cassette of the final from 1996, worst part of that?? I received it in 2003!!! LOL and the Wigfield album (you know Saturday night, ne ne na na nar)

Worst given - Probably giving my friend a present she had bought me the previous year, as I had forgotten to get her something so grabbed the first thing I could find and wrapped it up!

A $10 bill was the worst....I would have rather they bought be a gift with the 10 dollars.

The worst gift that I gave was I re-gifted a wall plaque with grapes that I hated. I received a gift from someone I wasn't expecting to get a gift from.....so I re-gifted.

When I was a kid and in school a boy that was in my class brought me a shirt. One he had been wearing the week before. I felt so bad for him. I hated not to take it because I knew he probably needed it and I didn't but I couldn't give it back becasue I didn't want to offend him.

A group of friends got together and gave a vibrator to a co-worker as a gag gift. However, she came into work a week later and complimented me on how well it worked!!

My brother had me going for weeks before Christmas, saying that he had the PERFECT gift for me. Whatever I did, I couldn't make him say what it was. I lost sleep wondering about it, I was sooo curious, that when the day finally came I was bouncing up and down. My brother proudly presents me with a heavy box. I tear it open, and find a dark brown triangle 'thing' made of clay. I stared at it. "It's a Skull Pyramid" my brother pointed out. "I made it in pottery class." I had never seen such an ugly thing in my life but exclaimed "WOW, just what I've always wanted. A skull pyramid..."

Worst gotten: Size 13 slippers from my father in law who knows my size is 10 1/2.

He said to just shove Kleenex tissue in the toe. They came from the clearance rack at KMart I found out . Gee thanks!

Worst given: All my gift giving is well received so none.
