Baking soda is sodium hydrogen carbonate. Heat it to get sodium carbonate:

2 NaHCO3 --> Na2CO3 + CO2 + H2O

Baking soda IS sodium carbonate. Well close enough. NaHCO3. Sodium carbonate forms easily when sodium hydroxide is allowed to react with carbon dioxide. As there is carbon dioxide in the air and our breath it can be made that way. If you make a solution out of sodium hydroxide, aka soda, and blow through the solution with a straw you will see a white milky cloud forming from the bubbles. That is sodium carbonate. It doesn´t dissolve very well in water and gathers on the bottom.
