In a very real sense, EVERYTHING we experience is in the past to one degree or another. When we look at the Sun we are seeing it as it was 8 minutes ago. When we look at the Moon, we are seeing it as it was about 2 seconds ago.

Even as you read these words, you are seeing them as they looked on your computer monitor screen a tiny fraction of a second ago. Not only does it take a certain amount of time for the light from the screen to reach your eyes, your nervous system requires time to detect the light and process it into something your conciousness can analyze and preceive as "reality."

This is true for all your senses. So, all reality is the past and the concept of a "present" is an illusion.

Any time we see something, we use light that had to travel (at a finite speed) from the event to our eyes.

Of course, the "cute" answer would be: if we could, we would have already won all the state lotteries.
