I live in Europe as an American. I use my Visa Check Card almost everywhere. I pay a small 1% conversion/transaction fee. Ex Pat Friends tell me this is a competitive rate compared to their 2% plus flat fees to use an ATM. I also withraw cash out as needed. There are daily limits so be careful. Be on the safe side, use your VCC. You get the most competitive rates and have protection from fraud in addition to freedom from fear of robbery. You are not a cash target. Now if you are moving large amounts over at a time then check into a wire transfer into a foreign bank account. Kind of a pain but could save you over the long haul. Avoid the airports and downtown exchange booths. Use the ATM and avoid getting ripped off! Enjoy your travels!

I find that ATM's are cheaper and easier. I think it's because you don't have to pay the commission fee. It may be cheaper to change large amounts of money at a bank, even with commission, but I tend to take out small amounts as I go. Keep in mind that ATM's in Europe take out a larger fee than ATM's in the states, and they won't necessarily tell you how much.

ATM. Exchange rate is slightly better (rates are bad at the airport), no commission fees and more convenient. Although you may be charged fees by the bank atm you will use. Even then, the ATM is better.

I believe it is actually cheaper to use an ATM. Visa or M/C. American Express is not accepted at a lot of places. Take larger amounts out each time because there is a transaction fee each time. Be very aware of who is standing around when you use an ATM.

Check with your bank as they have special rates with some banks (sometimes even free of charge) and your bank will be able to tell you what bank, ATM is the best to use. Also don't forget to advise your bank about your trip, as many ATM, Visa or Master cards don't have international access unless your bank does allow you to have.
I know some people who haven't advised their banks and they didn't have access to their money at all for 2 weeks... it is not a pleasant situation when you are on holiday....

Currency exchanges charge a hefty fee.
Check with your bank to see about their transaction and conversion fees. Generally, however, I have found ATMs to be very cost-effective.
Just be sure to use them infrequently, i.e. take out large amounts each time, so you don't get hit with a lot of fees.

airports will be rather expensive, plus they will charge you for a currency exchange. just use the ATM, and it will automatically come out in the currency of that country (euros, pounds, etc), for the normal usage charge. i've done this in several countries (canada and the UK) and have never been hit with bank fees at home. i use bank of america. that's not a recommendation for them though.

Go to a bank or Cambio. Exchanging currency at a bar or restaurant you won't get the current rate.
