Do you find reporters obnoxious?

I want to be a journalist after college, but I always here negative stereotypes about them. How many of you actually beleive reporters are rude, prying, and basically like every reporter in cop movies.

It's a tough profession, but once you build trust with people, they don't think you're obnoxious at all. The people in the town I cover know me as a person, not just as a reporter because I sit down with them and talk to them about other things besides the story I'm after - human being to human being rather than reporter to "victim." I find that most people want to have their stories told and when you show interest in them, they're grateful and flattered. There is a way to do your job with grace without being pushy and rude - it's called being a decent human being. They'll teach you reporting techniques in school, but a lot of it is just using your best judgment as a person. Plus, who cares about the stereotypes? Just do what you love and prove them all wrong - that's what I do. Good luck.

Reporters have to be aggressive to get a story in some cases, so yeah I would say sometimes they are. I am sure it depends on what type of journalism. If you want to do news reporting for example, the ones that get the big headlines are the ones that have thick skin and no shame. We have all seen reporters on the news shoving microphones in stunned or devastated peoples faces and asking invasive questions, it goes with the territory.

I used to like Greta and Nancy Grace but both of them are too tabloid for me now. Fox News is becoming more tabloid by the day. Theyhave ceased checking their sources before reporting.

Not all reporters are rude. But I do find them less than human when they push and push to take to a victim or a victim's family and not respect their privacy during a time of grief.
