I'm a downright fanatical baseball fan. I actually count down the days until the first Spring Training games.
That being said, I'm still scratching my head as to why Congress is involved in the whole steroids in baseball brouhaha. Why exactly do they care? Aren't there more pressing issues of national import with which Congress should concern itself?

cons_are: I have been a Tigers season ticket holder since 1993. I AM a real baseball fan. I don't like the abuse of steroids, and feel that the Commissioner's Office should handle it. Why should Congress get inviolved any more than it does if a bricklayer were taking steroids? I think you missed the gist of my question.

ooh: You might want to read your own links again. The President asked BASEBALL to clean itself up, not for Congress to get involved.

reds: What has your rant got to do with the question at hand?
Mussolini was a great leader and a great man. Of course, I wouldn't expect a communist to realize that fact. I'm sure you prefer Stalin.

With an 11% approval rating they need to work on something that might get them some approval elsewhere. Since nearly 75% of the people in the nation hate Barry Bonds for taking steroids they are hoping to ride his "coattails" to victory in November, 2008

They want the money that the players will have to pay in fines. The thing that really gets me is that I really liked George Mitchell before this. He was like my unsung political hero. And now he's made a mockery of Baseball. There are so many people who have used growth hormones to promote healing after an injury....this is soooooo stupid! Like they can eradicate all steroid use. I know there should be a limit but ther should also be some exemptions. Chrips! I use a steroid cream everyday for eczema! Guess I'll never play professional sports. lol Big brother is playing smackdown with the American public.

Bush tells baseball to get serious about steroids

CBC Sports
U.S. President George W. Bush asked Major League Baseball on Wednesday to take "strong steps" to eradicate the use of steroids and other illegal performance-enhancing substances by players.
Drug use "diminishes the integrity of sports," Bush's spokesman said.
"The president believes it's important for Major League Baseball management and the player's union to act by taking strong steps to address the problem," White House spokesman Scott McClellan said. ""

Come on now. The only other thing worst than steroids in baseball is the complete failure of the apple crop. What's more important than baseball and apple pie to Americans?

Because something like 48% of this country is MALE and about 80% of them LOVE sports.
Congress is mostly male. They watch sports. They think sports are important because they watch it.
Their sports-addict constituents are writing them emails asking them to do something, so they jump.
Too bad we can't get them to react to no health care for 46,000,000 people, but that is a BORING issue with few pictures.
On the other hand, the media can find lots of pictures of sports stars so the media covers it like white on rice.
Welcome to the media machine. If it has pictures, they report on it. Try to be part of the solution (which you have by posting your question.)

Because steroids are illegal and MLB has become an illegal drug culture that is having a profound effect on our youth. When children see these athletes who are their heroes and role models it changes their view on steroids. It's the same as why congress cares about drug use in the United States. Baseball has become a major contributor and influence in the drug world. Steroids might not be cocaine or crack or heroin but it is an illegal drug that has very negative effects on the human body.

Baseball is boring as hell. If they banned it permanently, I wouldn't care. Why Congress cares is beyond my comprehension. I think they have plenty of other things to worry about. Bottom line: WHO GIVES A CRAP.

Would someone please explain why this fascist murderer has come back?
I thought he got what was coming to him when the Italian resistance shot him and hung his body in front of that Esso gas station in Milan?
What is he doing back? Does it have to be done AGAIN? Do we have to bury him at a crossroads at midnight with a stake through his heart?

What can be more American than baseball. This steroid used has destroyed baseball to many including myself. If we can get this behind us, we can move on. They are trying to restore a true American icon. Personally, I am glad!

Well, first of all, the US Congress sticks it's nose in everything......anyway, first, because steroids are illegal and secondly for the health and safety of the players.
