I always think I've found the perfect gifts for people I give to, but when they unwrap it the look on their face is anything but pleased. You'd think I wrapped up a kitty doodle from the litterbox! I feel I've wasted my time and money.

I know one aunt who loves tea, so last year got her a tea sampler. Her comment - "I have tea from three years ago I haven't used yet!" A cousin has cats, so I got her a collectible cat figurine. She said, "I have so many, I don't know where I'm going to put this." Another cousin likes antiques and I got her some older pressed glass pieces, but still no apparent appreciation or enthusiasm for the costly gift. I can't seem to please anyone.

Any suggestions?

Maybe it's not you. It seems like you put a lot of thought into your gifts and try to personalize them. Sounds like the people you give them to are not very appreciative. Next time I might give a gift card and see what the response would be.

Can I get on your gift list?

Seriously, these sound like pretty unappreciative people. Maybe you could suggest a moratorium on gift giving in your family. That way nobody is offended by getting something that can't use or don't want.

A friend of mine gave her granddaughter a handmade quilt two years ago. She scoffed and tossed the quilt on the sofa. The next time my friend visited her granddaughter, she saw the quilt being used for a dog blanket. Needless to say, granddaughter never received another gift from my friend. Some people only consider a new, store-bought object a true gift.

Your perception of what people desire is a little off, perhaps a little late.

Unless you interact with someone on almost a weekly basis, you should avoid gifts that are specific or involve personal tastes.

People change their interests and hobbies on a whim these days. You would be safer with a gift card to a store you know they like.

These people should have been taught a lesson about the spirit of giving. I teach my kids no matter what they get, it was the thought that counts and they better act like they are happy with the gift whether they like it or not.

Just send them a Christmas card and maybe take them out to lunch or in your aunt's case a cup of tea.

Time is the most precious gift we can give.
